Community Service

Even as Hearts and Hands continues it efforts on hurricane relief, it has added a new component that focuses primarily on the elderly.
Every Wednesday volunteers deliver food to sixteen senior citizens in the surrounding communities of Hermitage, Tivoli, La Poterie and St. Johns. Most of the persons targeted do not have the means to prepare a balanced meal.
In providing this service, we are ensuring that at least once a week they can have hot nutritious meal which is important especially at their age, Managing Director of Hearts and Hands, Ms Shadel Nyack Compton explains. Some of the recipients also received food items to assist with their monthly supply.
As part of this programme volunteers also spend time chatting with and assisting the elderly with household chores. The programme has been welcomed by the senior citizens who are often at home on their own as it gives them the chance to reminisce about yesteryear and it provides companionship.
Hearts and Hands hopes to increase the number of recipients in the programme within the coming year. This new initiative complements the annual Christmas Community day when food baskets are delivered to elderly in the communities. The programme was started by Belmont Estate (Hearts and Hands corporate partner) in 2002 and is now under the auspices of Hearts and Hands. Last year food baskets were delivered to 40 persons within the community. ( June 01,2005)

Persons needing assistance with clothing can now visit the Hearts and Hands Relief Shop on Wednesday. Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Paul Coard from Rich and Rich Inc. and friends and well wisher in Miami and other parts of the US, Hearts and Hands has been receipt of food and clothing that are being distributed to persons in the community. Over the past month, more than 50 persons have taken advantage of this service. (June 01, 2005)

Hearts and Hands housing assistance programme has started and the response from the community has been overwhelming. To date more than 15 applications have been received and we expect the number to increase over the coming weeks. Priority for house repair is being given to the elderly and single parents households.
